Thermoelectric effects in correlated quantum dots and molecules

چکیده
We investigate thermoelectric properties of correlated quantum dots and molecules, described by a single level Anderson model coupled to conduction electron leads, by using Wilson’s numerical renormalization group method. In the Kondo regime, the thermopower, S(T ), exhibits two sign changes, at temperatures T = T1 and T = T2 > T1. We find that T2 is of order the level width Γ and T1 > Tp ≈ TK , where Tp is the position of the Kondo induced peak in the thermopower and TK is the Kondo scale. No sign change is found outside the Kondo regime, or, for weak correlations, making a sign change in S(T ) a particularly sensitive signature of strong correlations and Kondo physics. For molecules, we investigate the effect of screening by conduction electrons on the thermoelectric transport. We find that a large screening interaction enhances the figure of merit in the Kondo and mixed valence regimes.

Solid-state energy conversion technologies such as thermoelectric refrigeration and power generation require materials with low thermal conductivity yet high electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficiency. Although semiconductors are the best thermoelectric materials, they rarely have the such features. Nanostructures such as superlattices, quantum wires, and quantum dots provide novel method...
متن کاملThe effect of Coulomb interactions on thermoelectric properties of quantum dots.
Thermoelectric effects in a quantum dot coupled to the source and drain charge reservoirs are explored using a nonequilibrium Green's functions formalism beyond the Hartree-Fock approximation. Thermal transport is analyzed within a linear response regime. A transition from Coulomb blockade regime to Kondo regime in thermoelectric transport through a single-level quantum dot is traced using unif...

In nanoscopic systems quantum confinement and interference can lead to an enhancement of thermoelectric properties as compared to conventional bulk materials. For nanostructures, such as molecules or quantum dots coupled to external leads, the thermoelectric figure of merit can reach or even exceed unity. Moreover, in the presence of external magnetic field or when the leads are ferromagnetic, ...

Background: Quantum dots are commonly composed of cadmium contained semiconductors. Cadmium is potentially hazardous but toxicity of such quantum dots is not yet systematically investigated. On the other hand, in vitro studies have shown almost complete control of CdSe induced cytotoxicity by ZnS coverage. Toxicity of CdSe quantum dots and controlling this toxicity by ZnS coverage in immature m...
